Our primary purpose is to abstain from compulsive eating and compulsive food behaviors \u2014 including binge eating, restricting, starving, purging, and over-exercising \u2014 and to carry the message of recovery to those who still suffer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The OA program is patterned after that of Alcoholics Anonymous (AA). As our personal stories attest, the Twelve Step program of recovery works as well for compulsive eaters as it does for alcoholics. There are no dues or fees for members. We are self-supporting by our own contributions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The fellowship of&nbsp;Overeaters Anonymous&nbsp;encourages and promotes acceptance and inclusivity. All are welcome to join OA and are not excluded because of race, creed, nationality, religion, gender identity, sexual orientation, or any other attribute. (\u201cUnity with Diversity\u201d Policy Statement, 2023)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"383\" height=\"131\" src=\"https:\/\/oawny.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/oamtgpic1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-149\" srcset=\"https:\/\/oawny.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/oamtgpic1.jpg 383w, https:\/\/oawny.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/oamtgpic1-300x103.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 383px) 100vw, 383px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n<\/p>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"compulsive-eating-behaviors\">Compulsive Eating Behaviors<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>OA members experience a wide range of compulsive eating and food-related behaviors, including:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Binge eating, grazing or compulsive eating<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Obsession with body image, weight, or size<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Preoccupation with diets, restricting, fasting, or starving<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Laxative or diuretic abuse<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Excessive exercise<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Inducing vomiting after eating<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Chewing and spitting out food<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Use of diet pills, shots, or other medical interventions to control weight<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Constant preoccupation with food<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>While our symptoms may differ, we in OA share a common problem: the disease of compulsive eating. This common problem has led us to find a common solution in the Twelve Steps and Twelve Traditions of OA, with the support of the <a href=\"https:\/\/oawny.org\/index.php\/nine-tools-of-recovery\/\">nine tools of the program<\/a>.
